Setting Static IP address on Windows 2000 / XP

Overview

IP addresses can be automatically assigned (using DHCP) by all Speedtouch routers.  In some cases, you may need to set these addresses statically on your computer.  You will need to do this, on the most part, for the following reasons;

  • For some reason you have turned off the built in DHCP server
  • You have a R4.0 router in factory defaults and need to access it
  • You are setting up some port forwards (NAPT entries)

There are other circumstances that may also require these addresses to be set.

Problem

You need a static IP address set on a computer inside your LAN.

Solution

When a static IP is required in your LAN, the following steps show how to set this address and other TCP/IP attributes.

1. Open “Network connections” in the control panel and double click the “Local Area Connection"

2. Click Properties

3. Select Internet Protocol then click Properties

4. Assign your computer a static IP address. (in this example we use 10.0.0.1). When using a static IP address you need to specify your ISPs DNS server addresses.  (in this example we use the Xtra DNS servers)

You should now be able to surf the internet again using your static address
