Setting Static IP address on a Windows 98 / 98SE / ME

Overview

IP addresses can be automatically assigned (using DHCP) by all Speedtouch routers.  In some cases, you may need to set these addresses statically on your computer.  You will need to do this, on the most part, for the following reasons;

  • For some reason you have turned off the built in DHCP server
  • You have a R4.0 router in factory defaults and need to access it
  • You are setting up some port forwards (NAPT entries)

There are other circumstances that may also require these addresses to be set.

Problem

You need a static IP address set on a computer inside your LAN.

Solution

When a static IP is required in your LAN, the following steps show how to set this address and other TCP/IP attributes.

1. Open the “Control Panel”, and double click the “Network” icon

2. Highlight the entry with “TCP/IP -> ‘Your network adaptor’” and click “Properties”

3. Change the IP Address to Specify, and enter the IP Address as the Address you would like the PC to use. In this example we use 10.0.0.1.  Enter the subnet mask as below.

4. Select the “Gateway” tab and enter the IP address of the router and click add.  In this example we use the Thomson default of 10.0.0.138.

5. Select the “DNS Configuration tab” and select “Enable DNS”.  Fill in the details as below.  In this example we have used the Xtra DNS settings.  Click “Add” after typing in each DNS address you would like to use.

6. Click “OK” and you will be prompted to restart the computer. After rebooting, you should be able to surf the Internet again.
