Speedtouch 580 Wireless Client Setup Overview Two components are required to run a wireless connection, a wireless Access Point (your ST580 wireless router) and a Wireless Client. The wireless client is the application that manages your wireless device and allows it to connect to the wireless access point. Many new laptops now incorporate a wireless device, with vendor specific client application as part of the computer tools. There are also many external PCMCIA & USB wireless devices available that all come with a manufactures client. However to simplify matters we will provide a procedure for the Microsoft wireless client found in Windows XP. Procedure The wireless client manages your local wireless device, and can be unique to the make / model of the wireless device attached or incorporated in your PC. Check your manufacture details to determine what client you need to use. Windows XP Wireless Client Before a wireless client can be configured the device must first be installed onto your PC. With many new PC’s this as already been done as they are purchased wireless enabled. Check Wireless Device 1. To check that your wireless device is installed and working correctly, please select control panel / system / hardware / device manager and expand network adaptors as below.
Once you have checked your wireless device,
you can start configuring the wireless network connection. Start Connection Process 2. Select control panel / network connections / wireless connection icon. If the wireless connection has never been used it will be disabled. To start the connection process, double click this icon.
3. The connection wizard will display all the wireless access points available. Select the desired network and click connect button.
The progress of the connection is displayed as below.
A successful connection can be seen in the Wireless Connection ICON in the task bar, or a connected ICON in the Network Connection frame, as seen below.
Change Wireless Network Security One a successful connection has been established the connection can be made secure by enabling security. To enable security follow the process below.
4. To change wireless settings select control panel / network connections / wireless network connection and right click to select properties.
5. Once in the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box, select the Wireless Network tab. Highlight the required Wireless Network and select properties.
6. By default the data encryption is disabled. To enable data encryption select security method required and enter network key
7. Once selected your wireless link will need
to be disabled and enabled and in some cases your PC may need to be
restarted. |
